Name finalized, 'Dhaka Central University' to be formed with 7 colleges

 The name of the new university comprising seven government colleges in the capital has been finalized. The name of the new university will be ‘Dhaka Central University’.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Sunday (March 16) with a 32-member student delegation.

Several students and a UGC member who participated in the meeting confirmed this information.

It is learned that two opinions were formed among the students regarding the name of the new university. 17 students voted in favor of the name ‘Dhaka Central University’, but some students were hesitant about the name. According to them, the previous name of Dhaka College was ‘Dhaka Central College’, and therefore they voted in favor of changing the name of the university to ‘Federal University’. Later, the UGC asked them to discuss among themselves. After the discussion, they voted in favor of the name ‘Dhaka Central University’.

In February 2017, seven government colleges in the capital were affiliated to Dhaka University, mainly with various issues in mind, including improving the quality of conventional education and formulating a timely education system. The seven colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Women's College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Mirpur Bangla College and Government Titumir College. Later, various irregularities and shortsightedness were alleged by the Dhaka University authorities in the management of the colleges. As a result, students of these colleges took to the field in October last year.

In the wake of the long movement, a special committee was formed by the government in December. The members of that committee have been carrying out various tasks for more than three months, including feasibility studies, campus visits, formulating an outline for respectful separation, and meetings with teachers and students. The UGC finally invited all the stakeholders concerned on February 18 to name the proposed university. A meeting was called at the UGC today (Sunday) to finalize the name of the new university. The name of the new university was finalized there.
